Baldwin, James 1924-1987. US writer, born in
New York City, who portrayed the condition of
black Americans in contemporary society. His
works include the novels Go Tell It on the
Mountain 1953, Another Country 1962, and Just
Above My Head 1979; the play The Amen Corner
1955; and the autobiographical essays Notes
of a Native Son 1955 and The Fire Next Time
1963. He was active in the civil rights
movement.
